Food System Work Areas

Building a Stronger Local Food System Together

Healthy Archuleta works with residents, food pantries, growers, producers, businesses, youth, volunteers, and community partners to strengthen food access, local food production, learning, and connection across Archuleta County.

Our food-system work is rooted in nutrition security: helping ensure that community members have consistent and equitable access to healthy, safe, affordable food. We also recognize that food connects to health, local livelihoods, belonging, and community resilience.

Together, these work areas support a local food system where more people can grow, find, prepare, share, purchase, and enjoy nutritious food.
Food Access, Distribution & Local Purchasing
PictureThis work helps neighbors access healthy, affordable food while strengthening partnerships among food pantries, donors, local producers, and community volunteers.
Healthy Archuleta helps connect food resources across the county through coordination with the Food Pantry Network, local food purchasing, charitable-food distribution, food drives, and community produce-sharing efforts.

We work alongside pantry partners, donors, growers, ranchers, and volunteers to increase access to healthy food, including locally and regionally produced foods, while supporting respectful, welcoming food-access opportunities for neighbors.

Gardens, Growing & Food-System Education
PictureThis work supports nutrition security while also creating opportunities for learning, belonging, and community connection.
Gardens, hydroponic growing, composting, school-based learning, and hands-on food education create opportunities for people of all ages to learn where food comes from and how they can grow, prepare, and share it.

Healthy Archuleta supports community garden partners, schools, backyard growers, youth, families, educators, and volunteers through practical activities that build confidence, skills, and connection to the land and one another.

Grower, Producer & Food-Entrepreneur Engagement
PictureThis work supports local food production and economic opportunity by connecting growers, ranchers, food entrepreneurs, and community partners.
A strong local food system depends on the people who grow, raise, make, prepare, and sell food. Healthy Archuleta brings together growers, ranchers, backyard producers, chefs, food entrepreneurs, and regional partners to build relationships, share knowledge, and explore opportunities to strengthen local food production and markets.

Through the Growers|Producers Network and Forum, community members can learn from one another, identify shared needs, and help increase the availability of locally produced food in Archuleta County.

Community Food Hub Development
PictureThe Food Hub strengthens local food access, economic opportunity, and community connection.
The Archuleta Community Food Hub & Hall is a community-led effort to create a shared place where food access, local enterprise, learning, gathering, and connection come together.

The Food Hub is being shaped through input and participation from residents, producers, food businesses, pantry partners, youth, local government, and other community partners. Plans include opportunities for local food sales, aggregation and distribution, shared kitchen space, food entrepreneurship, storage, learning, and community events.

Food System Work Supports All Three Pillars
Food-system work is a central part of Healthy Archuleta’s Nutrition Security pillar. It also helps advance our other two pillars:

Health Equity
Access to healthy food, nutrition education, culturally responsive information, and practical food skills can support individual and community health. Learn about Health Equity

Community Cohesion
Food brings people together. Gardens, food pantries, events, producer gatherings, volunteer activities, and Food Hub planning create opportunities for residents and partners to build relationships, share leadership, and work toward common goals. Learn about Community Cohesion
