Supporting Community
Health & Wellnes

Strengthening Connection and Wellbeing in Archuleta County

In Archuleta County, wellness is often found in the quiet moments of everyday life, a walk along the San Juan River, time spent in the garden, sharing a meal with neighbors, or gathering together in community spaces. Mental and behavioral health are deeply connected to our relationships, our environment, and our sense of belonging.  As conversations around Mental Health Awareness continue, Healthy Archuleta recognizes that while clinical care remains essential, true wellbeing is also built through connection, prevention, inclusion, and community support.  In rural communities, access to mental and behavioral healthcare can be shaped by unique challenges, including provider shortages, geographic isolation, transportation barriers, affordability concerns, insurance gaps, and stigma surrounding mental health support. Healthy Archuleta works alongside local partners to strengthen a system of care rooted in compassion, accessibility, and community wellbeing.  Through collaboration with healthcare providers, schools, public health agencies, and community organizations, Healthy Archuleta supports a community-based approach that meets people where they are, whether at school, in community spaces, at home, or outdoors in nature.

Building Community Wellbeing Through Connection

Healthy Archuleta’s approach focuses on strengthening social belonging and creating opportunities for meaningful connection throughout the community. Some of the ways we support community wellbeing include:
  • Supporting youth resilience through leadership development and media literacy programs
  • Expanding access to care through Community Health Worker navigation and referral support
  • Strengthening the local behavioral health workforce
  • Supporting bilingual outreach, cultural responsiveness, and inclusive practices
  • Creating Community Learning & Leadership Circles (CLLCs) that foster connection and collaboration
  • Hosting wellness-centered programs that bring people together through food, gardening, education, and community engagement
Healthy Archuleta believes that health is not only shaped inside clinics, but also in the spaces where people gather, learn, grow, and support one another.

From Isolation to Inclusion

Healthy Archuleta is helping to shift the conversation around mental and behavioral health from isolation toward inclusion and community connection.  In Archuleta County, community gardens, shared meals, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative learning spaces have become important places of support and belonging. These efforts align with growing research showing that community-based approaches to mental health improve long-term wellbeing and strengthen resilience.  Programs like bilingual navigation support, culturally responsive outreach, and collaborative community gatherings help reduce barriers to care and create pathways for individuals and families to access services with dignity and support.

Nature, Wellness, and Rural Resilience

Living in the mountains provides more than beautiful scenery, it offers opportunities for healing, grounding, and restoration.
Research continues to show that spending time outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood, and support emotional wellbeing. In Archuleta County, nature itself can become part of a daily wellness practice.  Healthy Archuleta encourages community members to explore simple practices that support mental and emotional wellbeing that resonates with them, including:
  • Spending time outdoors in nature
  • Walking local trails or along the San Juan River
  • Gardening and growing food
  • Connecting with neighbors and community groups
  • Taking breaks from screens and digital distractions
  • Volunteering and participating in community events
  • Practicing mindfulness and reflection outdoors

Growing Wellness Through Gardening & Community

Gardening has become an important part of Healthy Archuleta’s broader vision for community wellbeing. Programs like Seed to Supper / Siembra La Cena create opportunities for community members to learn how to grow food while also building relationships, confidence, and connection. These gatherings provide space for learning, conversation, and shared purpose. Research shows gardening can:
  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve mood and emotional wellbeing
  • Encourage physical activity
  • Build social connection
  • Support healthy eating habits
  • Strengthen resilience and purpose
Sometimes, wellness begins not with a clinical appointment, but with planting a seed, sharing knowledge, and spending time together outdoors.

A Community-Based Vision for Health

Healthy Archuleta continues working to strengthen a more connected and resilient Archuleta County through programs focused on:
  • Nutrition security and food access
  • Mental and behavioral health support
  • Community health navigation
  • Youth engagement and prevention
  • Bilingual outreach and inclusion
  • Preventative health education
  • Community leadership and collaboration
By integrating food systems, health equity, mental wellbeing, and community engagement, Healthy Archuleta is helping build a healthier future where residents do not simply live in Archuleta County, they thrive here.
