Youth Prevention Initiatives

Building Strong Futures for Archuleta Youth

Healthy Archuleta’s Youth Prevention Initiative works alongside young people, families, schools, and community partners to strengthen protective factors that help youth thrive.

Our programs focus on mental wellbeing, substance use prevention, leadership development, and community connection so that youth in Archuleta County have the skills, support, and opportunities to build healthy futures.

Prevention is not just about avoiding risk, it is about creating communities where young people belong, lead, and succeed.

Why Youth Prevention Matters

In rural communities like Archuleta County, youth face unique challenges:
  • Limited access to behavioral health resources
  • Social isolation and stigma around mental health
  • Exposure to substance use at an early age
  • Fewer structured leadership and engagement opportunities
At the same time, our community has powerful strengths:
✔ Strong relationships
✔ Dedicated educators and families
✔ Youth who care deeply about their community
✔ Opportunities to connect health, food, and community leadership
Healthy Archuleta works to build on these strengths while addressing the challenges youth face today.

Our Approach: Youth-Centered Prevention

Our prevention work focuses on empowering youth voices and leadership.  Key strategies include:
  • Youth Community Learning & Leadership Circles (Youth CLLC)
  • Youth internships and leadership opportunities
  • Peer-to-peer education and engagement
  • Youth participation in community planning and initiatives
Young people are not just participants, they are partners in shaping solutions.

Mental & Behavioral Health Awareness

Healthy Archuleta works with community partners to strengthen mental wellbeing and resilience among youth.
Activities include:
  • Media literacy and prevention education
  • Youth discussions on mental health and coping skills
  • Community conversations that reduce stigma
  • Connections to trusted adults and resources
Our goal is to help youth develop the confidence and resilience to navigate challenges.

Community Partnerships

Youth prevention requires a whole-community effort.
Healthy Archuleta collaborates with:
  • Archuleta School District
  • Archuleta County Public Health Department
  • Axis Health System
  • Pagosa Springs Medical Center
  • Youth organizations and community leaders
  • Families and caregivers
Together, we are building a supportive environment for youth across Archuleta County.

Youth Prevention in Action

  • School Partnerships for Prevention and Leadership: Healthy Archuleta partners with local middle and high schools to engage students in prevention education and leadership activities that promote healthy choices and strengthen youth voice within their schools and community.
  • Tobacco and Vaping Prevention: Students learn about the health impacts of tobacco and vaping and build skills to resist peer pressure and make informed decisions.
  • Media Literacy: Youth explore how advertising, social media, and marketing strategies target young audiences, helping them develop critical thinking skills to evaluate the messages they see online and in media.
  • Youth Leadership Development: Through discussions, activities, and youth-led engagement opportunities, students strengthen their ability to speak up, support their peers, and promote healthy behaviors.
  • Building a Healthier Community: By combining education, engagement, and leadership opportunities, Healthy Archuleta empowers youth to become positive voices for health and wellbeing in their schools and across Archuleta County.
