The FSFE - Food Coalition will be hosting a book club featuring, “Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the Land of the Plenty,” by Mark Winne, October 19th - November 16th in Pagosa Springs.  This book poses many questions about food access that aren’t typically part of the current conversation around food like: “In a time of rising rates of both diabetes and obesity, what can we do to make healthier foods available for everyone?”
  • Thursday, October 14th from 2:00-3:00 pm: Mark Winne will present at the Community Conversation via zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83978862954 on the topic of “Closing the Food Gap”.
  • Tuesday, October 19th, from 6:00-7:00 pm: Kick off for the book club where registrants can check out a copy of the book.
  • Tuesday, October 26th, November 2nd, and 9th from 6:00-7:00 pm: In person and on zoom session.
  • Tuesday, November 16th, 6:00-7:00 pm: Final discussion and book signing with the author.
The book club is limited to the first 12 registrants. Additional community members will be put on a waiting list for a future book club.

A sample of book club discussion questions:
  • What are your reactions to learning about the history of the food system and implications of the various programs and policies?
  • Publisher’s Weekly says: “Winne concludes his tale in our present food-crazed era, giving voice to low-income shoppers and exploring where they fit in with such foodie discussions as local vs. organic.”  Share your thoughts about the implications of income on the accessibility of nutrient dense local food.
  • Do you make personal decisions such as forgoing something else in your budget in order to be able to make better food choices?
  • What can we as an Archuleta Community do to make a difference?
  • Other TBD
