6-Week Class Series

​A six-week introduction to the fundamentals of growing your own food. Topics include garden planning, soil health and preparation, sowing, transplanting, garden maintenance and harvest.

Garden Workshop Series

Interested in learning new gardening skills? Join us for one or all of these events this spring and summer!  These workshops are designed to coincide with what’s happening next in the garden. Learn more about each workshop in the 2023 Garden Education Series below.

​Please register for each session that you wish to attend and pay for the workshop(s). Registration links are provided in each of the workshop descriptions. Seed Swap and Workshop: Starting Seeds Indoors 
Saturday, March 18, 10 AM to 1 PM (workshop 9 to 10, Seed Swap 10:30 to noon)
Instructor: Suanne McLellan 
Location: CSU Extension
Class Fee: $10 (fee is for workshop, seed swap is a free community event)

Get a jump on our short growing season by starting plants indoors.  Topics will include indoor lighting set-up, making potting mixes, starting seeds in trays, watering/thinning, and potting up seedlings.  Stay for the free community seed swap (don’t worry if you don’t have seeds to bring/share!)

Preparing Garden Beds for Planting and Basic Irrigation Setup
Saturday, May 6, 10 AM to Noon
Location: Vista Garden    
Instructors: Suanne McLellan, Chris Frederics

In this workshop, we will set up new in-ground beds in the Vista Garden.  Participants will gain hands-on experience of double-digging and using a broadfork. Topics of discussion will include soil testing, amendments, preparing existing beds, setting up new in-ground beds, and an overview of irrigation options and water regulations.

Plant Sale/Swap and Workshop: Sowing and Transplanting Early Crops
Saturday, May 20 (workshop 9 to 10, Plant Swap/Sale 10:30 to noon)

In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience in direct-sowing and transplanting the earliest cold hardy crops, and setting up frost and wind protection.  Additional topics of discussion will include hardening off and watering.  Stay for the plant sale/swap- Bring your extra seedlings to swap, or buy some transplants for your garden.

Farm Tour, Work and Learn: Summer Garden Maintenance (and Solstice Potluck)
Wednesday, June 21,  10 am - 1 pm
Location: TerraWalk Farm

Come get an in-depth tour of the vegetable production at TerraWalk Farm on the longest day of the year!  In the tour, Farmer Chris will discuss a wide variety of topics related to summer garden maintenance, including watering, thinning, mulching, fertilizing, hilling potatoes, trellising, and pest control.  Participants will gain hands-on experience by helping with current tasks on the farm.  Bring a potluck dish to share!

Garden Tour with the Mountain High Garden Club

One of the best ways to learn about gardening is to see other gardens and ask questions to the gardeners.  On this weekend, Pagosa gardeners open their gardens to the public, providing tours and answering questions.  Come out and get inspired!

Location:  MASK Ranch

Class Fee: $10

Come get an in-depth tour of the vegetable production at MASK Ranch!  Farmer Kim will discuss putting the garden to bed, and participants will gain hands-on experience with planting garlic, building compost piles, and harvesting/storing root crops.
